Clean the Gulf with Tankers

BP won’t have an extra tanker in the area until the end of June. Oil skimming is not effective. There is doubt that the oil can even be cleaned up. But I refuse to accept that. Through my research, I have learned of proposals to collect the Gulf oil spill with readily available oil tankers and ships. By using equipment to separate the oil from seawater both above and below the water’s surface, large ships could store and transport the oil to onshore facilities. This concept was utilized to capture 85 percent of a far larger 1993 spill in Saudi Arabia. Just a couple of moderate-sized ships could filter and store in a day what the current operation is doing per month. The cost for a full-size oil tanker could be as low as $30,000 per day, including gear and crew. But, large scale techniques are not currently in use by BP and are not sanctioned by the Coast Guard. We intend to publicize these solutions to the spill, help clear a path to government approval of these plans, and raise funds to help seed, launch and operate people's efforts to bring in large ships and send them where the oil is-as a Citizen’s Mission.
